They were essentially not owned by land owners, instead entering a contract with the land owner in return for work and freedom. Upon the completion of their service most were given land, a cow, arms, clothes and a years supply of free corn. Indentured servants usually had a contract of 4 to 7 years of service where they would be provided food, accommodation, clothing in return for labour. This differed greatly to slavery in many areas. Prior to 1655 the colonies in America had indentured servants. You read that correctly, the first American slave owner was black.

However, slavery was not always a part of the colonial American scenery, and was started by a former indentured servant, a black man. But slavery was vital for the economy in the southern states of the US. There was no limitation on age or gender or the hours they would work. Slaves, who were black people from Africa, were bought and sold like cattle, and forced to work their entire life for their owners. While the Fist isn't really a castle or even a structure, due to its positioning on a lone hill commanding the surrounding flat plain, it is one of the more defensible positions that the Night's Watch can use north of the Wall.Without a doubt one of the darkest chapters in American history would be that of slavery. The stones are incredibly ancient, the site having been used as a defensive position for well over six thousand years. Physically, the ring fort is a simple circle of large megalithic stones around the top of the hill. It commands a view overlooking the Milkwater river. It is located at the western edge of the Haunted Forest, where the foothills of the Frostfang mountains begin. The Fist is located many days north of the Wall, deep in territory held by the Wildlings. There is a ringwall of chest-high grey stone that crowns the top of the steep, stony hill. Its windswept crown is visible for miles.

The hill offers commanding views with the slopes at a dangerous angle to the north and west and only slightly less dangerous to east. The Fist is a hill that rises above the Forest around it. It is where the Night's Watch fought the Battle of the Fist of the First Men. The Fist of the First Men is an ancient ringfort built by the First Men in the Dawn Age.
